The first apparition occurred on 11 February 1858.

During her ninth apparition, on 25 February, Bernadette claimed to have been directed to a spring that had hitherto not existed in the grotto. Its discovery by Bernadette, witnessed by hundreds of onlookers, was eventually declared miraculous. Later studies have shown that the water is pure and contains chlorides of soda, lime and magnesia, bicarbonates of lime and magnesia, silicates of lime and aluminium, oxide of iron, sulphate of soda, phosphate, and organic matter. Otherwise, it is believed to contain no therapeutic ingredients.

Subsequently, however, the water was claimed to be capable of healing the sick and lame. Of the many thousands of pilgrims who visit Lourdes every year, some claim to be have been miraculously healed. It is estimated that the spring has produced 27,000 gallons of water each week since it first emerged during Bernadette’s visions.

One Response to Our Lady of Lourdes France

  1. Stephen Lowe says:

Subject: Happy feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes!
    Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Greetings and Happy feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes!

Every year, on February 11, we celebrate this beautiful feast day of Our Lady. We’ve probably heard and read the story of Our Lady of Lourdes and Bernadette. In 1858 from February 11th until July 16th the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to a young French schoolgirl named Bernadette Soubirous. To learn more about this, Father John Lochran wrote a book The Miracle of Lourdes. In his book Father John Lochran retells the familiar story with deep insight and new appreciation. Lochran explores the history and meaning of the miraculous events in light of modern theology and spirituality and offers his own reflections on Lourdes, then and now. This armchair pilgrimage to one of the church’s most beloved shrines will be a treasured keepsake for those who have never been to Lourdes and for those who have.

I would also recommend you watching the classic movie, The Song of Bernadette, about St. Bernadette and Our Lady’s mysterious appearances to her. You can also buy that Movie from any Catholic Bookshop in your area and give it so your loved one as a gift on St. Valentine’s feast day.

We do have many Feasts of Our Lady, which I would like to highlight,

January 1st: Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God
February 11th: Our Lady of Lourdes
    March 25th: The Annunciation
May 13th Our Lady of Fatima
June 12th: The Immaculate Heart of Mary
July 16th Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
August 5th Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major
August 15th Assumption of Our Lady
September 8th Birthday of Our Lady
September 15th Our Lady of Sorrows
September 24th Our Lady of Ransom, Our Lady of Walsingham
October 7th, Our Lady of the Rosary
    December 8th: The Immaculate Conception.

You may wonder why the Church celebrates so many feasts in honor of Mary throughout the year. You may also wonder what meaning they have for your own life.

In his book, Mysteries of the Virgin Mary, Fr. Peter John Cameron considers some of the major “mysteries” associated with the Mother of God not only to help you better understand these feasts, but also to help you see that Mary is always at hand, ready to help you become who you are meant to be. She stands in solidarity with you so that you might stand in solidarity with her Son, living your life to the fullest. This handy guide to the Church Marian feasts offers reflections to encourage meditation on the 13 principal Marian mysteries celebrated by the Church. Chapters unfold according to the chronology of Mary’s life, starting with the Immaculate Conception and including, for example, her birthday, the Annunciation, the Visitation, her sorrows, etc. please consider reading it if you can find it. It can take your spiritual life to another level.

Mary and Joseph trusted in God to do what was best for them. They humbly accepted his will and placed their lives in his hands. Can we do any less with our own lives? I invite you to Place your trust in God and his loving mother. Have faith that Mary is always here and eager to help you when you wish to ask God for the graces you need.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary Guide us all on our Journey of faith!

The novena of Our Lady o Lourdes starts tomorrow, February 11 and continues for nine days,

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you save souls.
Happy feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes and God bless you all!
